Wedding Cakes and Desserts – How Do You Decide?

Wedding Cakes and Desserts – How Do You Decide?

We asked owner, Sara Young, of Iced Bakery for her expert advice on how to choose your wedding cake and ideas for all of the details!

It’s no secret that there is a ton of work that goes into planning your wedding! One of those things to plan is choosing your wedding cake or desserts for you and your guests. Sure, you probably know what you like when it comes to cake, but have you ever thought about the details of your wedding cakes and how to choose one for yourself?

Sara offers and recommends doing a cake tasting and consultation for the couple prior to making any decisions to make it easier to answer any questions you as the couple may have. It’s a great idea to meet face to face to make sure everyone is on the same page, and what other meeting do you get to go to where you can also eat cake?!

What happens during the cake tasting?

The first thing Sara likes to ask is how many servings of cake you’ll be needing and what your budget is. These are two very important things to know to make sure she can help determine what might be best for the couple, as she can work with any budget you may have. She offers pricing on tiered cakes, cupcakes, sheet cakes and desserts to ensure the couple is getting what they want. If your budget for your cake is limitless and you want a tiered cake to cut and serve to your guests, she can do that! If you’re thinking you’d rather have a small cake to cut into as a couple and offer sheet cake or assorted desserts to the guest, she can do that as well! The in-person meeting is so important for these details because Sara likes to show the couple size options for their cakes as well as determine how much you will need.

Cake Styles

Next, are the fun details of your cake. Decorations, flowers, and more! One of your options for decorating your cake is using fondant instead of buttercream. With Iced Bakery, this adds a $1 increase per serving but it will give your cake a completely different look. Sara can offer fake flowers or other decorations to your cake such as toppers, or she can talk with your florist to communicate what she would need to incorporate real flowers or greenery on to your cake. One of the ways they like to add a gorgeous and unique touch is to copy the pattern of the bride’s wedding dress and recreate it in a design on the wedding cake. We love this idea! It’s a great way to tie your cake and your wedding look together.

Get creative with the flavors!

When it comes to cake flavors, don’t be afraid to try something new or to offer a few different types! This is a great way to provide variety to your guests. Some of Iced Bakery’s most popular flavors are Strawberry Champagne, Chocolate Raspberry, Salted Caramel and Cinnamon Roll. During your consultation meeting with Sara, you can try up to 6 cake flavors to determine what you would like to serve on your wedding day.

What’s popular lately?

You might be thinking that that’s all a lot of information about cake options, but what do people usually do? Here a couple of trends Sara has been seeing lately:

  • A lot of couples like to do a 2-tiered cake to display and cut together. The couple typically cuts into the bottom tier and if they want, can save the top tier to share on their anniversary. If you’re thinking you don’t want to save the top tier, Iced Bakery offers the option to come back for your 1 year anniversary and she can recreate the cake for you to enjoy fresh.
  • For the guests, they’ve seen a lot of people going for smaller dessert options like desserts or cupcakes. This is a great option if you’re looking to add variety into your dessert selection. Iced Bakery can offer cake balls, cake pops, cookies, pies cheesecakes, macaroons, dessert bars, and more.

Choosing your cakes or desserts for your wedding day is not always an easy decision! If you’re not sure where to start, let Iced Bakery help you with your selections and provide an amazing dessert for you and your guests!
