Finding the Right DJ for your Wedding

Selecting the right DJ for your wedding can be a daunting task! Do we go the cheapest route? How much should we pay for our DJ? What should all be included? Do we get to pick the music? Do we really even need a DJ for our reception?

Finding a DJ isn’t that difficult.  Finding a great, reputable one can be!

Your DJ should rank high on your list of expenditures for your wedding, right up there with your venue and your photographer.  YES, YOU NEED A DJ!  The DJ is the glue that will hold your entire night together.  A great DJ will act as a traffic cop of sorts.  They are the ones lining up the wedding party for introductions, making sure your photographers and cinematographers are in the right position for capturing the best shots and letting everyone in the room know what is happening.  Check with your venue, photographers, and cinematographers to see who they have liked working with.  Remember, they have seen it all, the bad, the good, and the great!

Inquire with your DJ!

Once you have a few leads for your DJ, make contact with them! Us DJs get just as excited to get a message from you as you are to send it to us!  One of your first questions to your DJ will be how much? Pricing goes a little deeper than a generic how much. First off, DJs can range from $500-$5000 a night. The old saying is true, you get what you pay for, but keep in mind, everyone has to start somewhere. You don’t want to book the Ferrari of venues, the Lamborghini of videography, and try to get by on the Ford Tempo of a DJ.  Make sure to check the referrals of your prospective DJ. Any reputable business out there has positive reviews on Google, Facebook, or their website.

Meet Your DJ!

No, seriously – meet them in person! If geography is an issue, (you live hours away) at the very least do a phone call with him or her.  This will give you a feel for their personality and what they will be like with a microphone in their hand. Are they passionate about their business? Do they share your vision for your wedding day? Can they fulfill that vision? Do they have video and pictures to back up what they have said they can provide?

Each DJ does things a little bit differently on how they charge.  Some do an all in one package, but most offer different packages to choose from.  Typically as the price goes up, so do the add-ons to the packages.  Uplighting, dance floor lighting, monograms, photo booths, and special effects are just a few of the add-ons that are available on the market today.

Answer the questions your DJ will ask you!

After narrowing the field down and deciding on a DJ, it’s time to get to work!  Your newly hired DJ should give you direction of what decisions they need from you.  Remember this is your day, you get to make the decisions on how it goes from the order things happen to the music you will dance to with your new spouse.  It may seem overwhelming at first, but these decisions will be the backbone of your reception.  You don’t need to pick all the music your guests will dance to all night.  That’s part of the reason you hired a professional!
