Fall Wedding at Cedar Ridge Winery

Fall Wedding at Cedar Ridge Winery

Kaitlyn Caffrey + Kristian Thompson 11.05.2016

Where/how did you first meet?
We met online and had our first date at The Mill in Iowa City. I arrived before Kristian did and must have looked nervous for our date because one of the bar’s regulars came over to give me a pep talk. I remember jokingly telling the woman that I owed her a thank you if I ended up marrying this man. I had no idea at the time that I would marry him only five years later. When he arrived, I knew it was him because of the hat he was wearing. It was the same one he had on in the photo I saw online. I distinctly remember suffering through half a glass of PBR while Kristian enjoyed his Guinness. That was the first and last PBR I have had.

How/when did you know he/she was the one?
I knew Kristian was the one when we took a week long vacation to Yellowstone National Park. We drove there and back, stopping at iconic points along the way. Before we went I was determined to stay at a hotel every night for fear of bears and other animals. Kristian was set on camping. Conveniently, we were never near a hotel when it was time to stop driving each day and the one in Yellowstone was quite expensive. Somehow there was always a campground nearby though. We camped all but one of the seven nights and it made me realize how much adventure I had been missing out on. There was never a dull or boring moment during that trip and I realized then that there would always be adventure with him.

Tell us about the proposal!
Kristian proposed at Annett Nature Center in Indianola, Iowa. We were taking our dog, Belle, for a walk and were the only ones there. It was a bit chilly out that day and Kristian had bought me a new jacket. After I put the jacket on I realized there was something in the pocket, the ring! Before I knew it he was on one knee. I said yes of course and we walked around the park talking out the possibilities for the future. Between the solitude of the park and the excitement of his proposal, it felt like we were in our own little world.

What is the theme and color palette for your special day?
Our colors were purple and gold. We also used a lot of other jewel tones to accent. There wasn’t really a theme, but we had lots of beautiful flowers and centerpieces! The background of the grapevines at Cedar Ridge Winery were also stunning!

What was your most memorable wedding moment or favorite part of your wedding?
We both agree that our favorite moment was walking back up the aisle holding hands as a married couple!

What advice would you have for other couple’s getting married?
Go into the planning and the day with the idea that everything will work out beautifully. Things may not go exactly according to plan, but the wedding can and will go on. At the end of the day, the most important part is that the two of you are happily married.

About Stacie Ricklefs

I LOVE a good love story! My husband and I met our freshman year of college when he drew my name out of a hat to write a bio about me in English class. Almost 10 years of marriage later he is still my best friend and partner in raising our 3 handsome little men. Love stories are what drew me into becoming a photographer and owner of Stacie Ricklefs Photo + Design. I still tear up at weddings during the beautiful intimate moments... but always after I get the killer shots of them.
