How they met…
Julie and Brian met in Chicago in the Spring of 2014, through the use of After a few “winks” and several emails, they couldn’t wait to meet one another, so they set up their first date.

The plan for their first date was fairly typical of online dating – to meet some place neutral (for coffee or cocktails), socialize for about an hour and see where things go. Well, the plan went perfectly because they hit it off immediately, as they shared appetizers, had a couple drinks, and spent the next 5 hours laughing and getting to know each other. It was obvious that they had found something special.

How they knew they were the one…
Since Julie is from Iowa and Brian is from Elgin IL, she brought Brian home to meet the extended family over Thanksgiving weekend about 6 months into their relationship. Julie surprised him with 10th row tickets to see the Iowa Hawkeyes play Nebraska the day after Thanksgiving. The tailgating alone was so much fun. Then, the following day they had a cocktail party at one of their family friend’s home in Cedar Rapids. Brian tells Julie that these 3 full days with her Iowan family and friends solidified that she was the one. That Iowa kindness sealed the deal for him. Julie was just making sure he could hang with us Hawkeye Fans. She knew from the moment she met him he was the one. 🙂

The proposal…
The most noteworthy vacation was their trip to Jamaica. The weather was absolutely gorgeous, and they did so many memorable things – they went out on a catamaran, jumped off cliffs into the ocean, and rented a scooter to cruise up and down the coast. At the end of this amazing vacation, on the last night of their stay, Brian planned for them to watch the sunset on the cliffs. He lined the path to the cliff with flower petals he had secretly gathered the whole time they were in Jamaica. The petal lined path led out to the cliff where the sun was setting, about 5:15 pm. Brian got down on one knee and asked Julie to marry him. The moment was perfect. They shared a bottle of champagne and spent the next hour telling each other why they wanted to marry each other. It was unforgettable.

Brian and Julie decided to have a classic black and white wedding. They had accents in navy blue, bright green, and silver. They wanted the tones to be timeless and modern. The bride and groom were in white and black. The Bridesmaids wore navy and the Groomsmen wore charcoal. The flowers were natural greens and white.

Most memorable wedding moments…
For Brian and Julie, there are so many memorable moments, but in the morning before the ceremony, they sent each other love letters. This really started their day with the right focus on how much they loved each other. The moments before walking down the aisle for both of them were unforgettable. They were so excited to see each other. When they got to Brown Deer for the reception, they took golf carts out onto the golf course to take more formal photos. This was a fun moment, gorgeous weather and a time together to reflect on the whole day without anyone to interrupt. The food at the Marriott was excellent. Their guests were very pleased with their service. Lighting up the dance floor with friends and family was the best way to end the festivities.

Advice for other couple’s getting married…
Always find time together to stop and reflect on the day. It is hard to see everyone and be in the moment. You have to find those little moments together to enjoy all of your hard work and planning. Read the reviews on your vendors so that you know their service is well received with all of their clients. It really goes so fast, don’t sweat the small stuff and be realistic on your budget. Create Instagram spots or pick a venue that has those unique photo op spots. Your guests will love that feature. Invest in great entertainment, great MUSIC makes the moments even more special.

About Nicky Wilkinson

I’m proud to say I’m an Iowa farm girl from Swisher. I married my college sweetheart, Dale Wilkinson, and we have five girls. We live in the country with our cats and dog. Camping, canoeing, horseback riding and biking are some of our favorite activities. Our girls keep us busy with plenty of school activities and hobbies. I get the opportunity to share that inspiration with couples to help them plan for their best day ever.
